Wheelchair Ramp Installation Instructions
Patent # US 7,240,388 B2

1.) Unstack all ramp components from pallet.  Platform will be at the bottom.  It will have all of it’s legs and posts inside of it.  Each ramp also has it’s legs inside of it.  The ramp section with the longest legs will start first and should be the one stacked closest to the platform.

2.)  After removing the legs from the platform, sit the platform on it’s side.  The platform has 6 pockets - each pocket has a groove machined into it.  Install the legs into the outer 4 corners in the platform.  To install the leg, remove the bolt in the top and sit it aside for later use to install the rails.  Loosen the bolt in the center of the legs. Never remove this bolt.  Each leg has a foot that’s off set to one side.  This foot must be off set so that it fits underneath the platform.  If the bolt fits into the groove, and the foot sits underneath the platform, you should have the legs in the right position.  There’s two different types of legs - 1 left, 1 right.

3.) Also inside the platform are two smaller metal posts that have two bolts in them.  One has a large washer, one has a small washer, remove the bolt with the large washer for later use will rails.  Loosen the bolt of the small washer and slide it into the inner 2 pockets of the platform.  And firmly tighten.   The bolt holes at the top should face one another.  You will also have four aluminum posts. Two of these posts should fit over the inner steel posts.  The other two will fit  the leg posts up against the building. Make sure you have the hole in the post lined up with the hole in the leg

4.) When adjusting platform height, you must hold the metal inner leg into the platform with one hand, loosen the bolt and let the leg telescope into the position desired.  Once you have the platform level, make sure you tighten the bolts to 50 ft lbs.  Remember ADA requires the platform to be no more than ¼’’ below the threshold.  It must not slope away from the building more then ¼” per foot.
One side of the platform has 4 pocket. point this side in the direction  you want the ramp to go.

5)  Now that the platform is set in place and properly level, install the rails in the direction that you need them so that the 4 pocket side is open.  And the building side is open.  The platform rails can be installed either one on each side or in L fashion to the left or to the right.  Make sure the holes in the rails line up with the holes in the legs before you install any ramp sections.  The aluminum posts that are
extra will fit at the end of the last rail installed and one will fit next to the building of the leg that is exposed with no rail.

6.) Installing Ramp Sections -  Each ramp section should have it’s own legs.  They install just like the platform legs by removing the bolt of the large washer, and loosening the bolt of the small washer (do not remove).  Slide into machine grooved into pocket.  Install both legs.  Lift ramp section and attach to platform by holding it at about 30 degrees up, sliding it onto the hook mechanism and lowering it into position and making sure it locks into place.  use a long level, place it on the platform in level position.  Put a one foot mark on the level, extend that over the ramp section.  Put a tape measure at the edge of the level and measure down 1”, this will give you a 1 in 12 pitch. install remaining ramp sections.  The bottom section is a wedge shaped section and does not have replaceable legs. At this point Use a string line tie it at the bottom of the ramp and stretch it tightly all the way over the platform.  Lower each ramp section so that it does not touch the string.  Raise the top section first, working your way down, until it almost touches the string.  Continue with all ramp sections until you get to the bottom.  It is important that you have the ramp as straight as possible or else the rails will not fit correctly.

7.) Installing Guard Rails - Included in your ramp kit is one left and one right guard rail (aluminum picketed rail) for each ramp section.  Starting from the top, slide the rails onto the legs that stick up through the ramp sections.  You will notice the rail has a square tube on one end, and an angle on the other end.  The square will slide over the post and the next rails angle will fit around the square post.  That’s why at the top of the platform, you have 2 aluminum posts for the angle on the first rail to attach to.  Continue all the way down in the same fashion, when you get to the wedge it’s legs are already installed and just need to be lifted into position.  The rails that come with the wedge are shorter, install in the same fashion.

8.) Installing Inner Hand Rails - Your kit will have two banded packages of rails a left and a right side.  Starting at the bottom of the wedge section, install the inner rail with the large return loop.  The next rail will be nothing more than a straight piece with a bracket on one end and a swedge section on the other.  Slide the swedge into the rail you have already installed.  Install the bolts but do not tighten.  Leave all rails bolts loose until you have all rails installed.  Continue on until you get to the end.  This will be the rail with the small loop and it attached the same way.  Now go to the opposite side and do the same.  Once you have all rails in place, tighten all the bolts.  And then again recheck all the bolts in the platform and the ramp legs to make sure they are tight.  (50 lbs. per ft.)
